Ryan Coogler Unveils the Secrets of \’Sinners\’: Filmmaking Techniques Explained in 10 Minutes

Ryan Coogler delved deeply into film aspect ratios and formats like a seasoned professor for about 10 minutes.

As part of his collaboration with Kodak ahead of the debut of his latest horror movie \”Sinners,\” Coogler demonstrated four different types of filmstock. He highlighted their individual contributions during filming and how these impact him as a filmmaker. Throughout this detailed presentation, he filled several whiteboards, showcasing his deep understanding of cinema production techniques.

\”I’m genuinely thrilled to share that we’ve shot \’Sinners\’ on film,” stated Coogler. “It’s a medium I developed a passion for during my time at film school, which is why I decided to bring several rolls of film with me.”

The director of \”Black Panther\” delved into his explanation by displaying Super 8mm film, noting that it is typically employed for personal videos yet imparts a particular visual charm to scenes. He subsequently presented Super 16mm clips, which hold special significance for Coogler.

What we used for filming \’Fruitvale Station\’ is remarkable because it’s essentially the same medium but slightly broader. Just like with capturing film getting wider — similar to how it works in digital photography — widening provides an increase in resolution along with a shallower depth of field, which means that only part of the image remains sharp at any one moment,” explained Coogler.

Next, he shifted focus to 35mm film—pointing out that many iconic works were captured using this medium. However, proudly, Coogler moved on to discuss what \”Sinners\” was partly filmed with, referring to it as \”the big boy format\”—65mm.

\”Sinner\” has already made some historical strides as it is the inaugural film to be filmed using the 2.76:1 aspect ratio—a format previously employed by cinematic greats such as \”Ben-Hur\” and \”The Hateful Eight.\” Additionally, this movie starring Michael B. Jordan marks another milestone for being the very first production captured with both the 2.76:1 ratio and Imax’s distinctive 1.43:1 ratio.
