There are numerous excellent television series that have aided TV viewers in understanding and connecting with cultures different from their own. A specific show that debuted on the
2025 Netflix schedule
–
North of North
— has entered that arena. The star Anna Lambe talked to Velvet Voce about how wonderful it is to share Inuk culture with the global audience.
Lambe, who hails from the same location where the series was shot, talked to me about the
surprising success of
North of North
The actress mentioned that it feels \”unique\” to let viewers into her living space, and she enjoys watching people \”develop a fondness\” for the northern area she is familiar with, noting that this allows the public to value something she has always cherished. As she put it:
I’m originally from Iqaluit, Nunavut—the location where they filmed this series. Sharing a place so dear to my heart has truly been an honor. This town shaped me into the person I am today; growing up here was instrumental in defining who I’ve become. To have others experience the North through my eyes—with all its genuine camaraderie, warmth, joy, playfulness, along with the undeniable hardships—has been incredible. The way we confront these challenges with humor and affection resonates deeply. Seeing viewers connect with the beauty of the North and develop their own fondness for it feels validating—it’s almost as though everyone finally understands what I’ve seen all along.
It isn’t the first instance where a TV show on Netflix has imparted significant cultural insights. One could highlight the
teen romance series
Never Have I Ever
for its portrayal of Indian-Americans. Alternatively, we could
talk about
The Most Beautiful Flower,
A program originating from Mexico that provides an authentic glimpse into its culture.
But
North of North
Is one of the initial programs to genuinely delve into Inuk culture, an Indigenous community historically residing in the Arctic and surrounding areas. Such representation is quite rare, making this show pioneering as it provides viewers with insights into their way of life.
While it is a sitcom with plenty of twists and turns that are akin to a rollercoaster rather than everyday life, the love and laughter that Lambe speaks about from her culture is certainly there. The fact that it was filmed in Lambe’s hometown in the first place is something that I’m sure made this experience that much better for her.
There has not been an official announcement for a second season yet—truthfully, considering Netflix\’s tendency to frequently cancel TV series, this remains uncertain. However, let\’s hope that its unexpected popularity on Netflix might lead to another installment since there is plenty more storyline waiting to be explored. Perhaps we\’ll have the chance to witness it in the future.
another TV schedule
soon enough.
If you haven\’t had the opportunity to watch
North of North
Still, make sure to verify it out with a
Netflix subscription.
