David Koepp, the screenwriter of the film, explained the reasoning behind the title \”Black Bag\”: \”I came up with it simply because it seemed catchy. In New York, there was this film producer whom I used to know; when he encountered anything unpleasant or unfavorable, he\’d say, \’It ends up in the black bag.\’ The idea being that once an item lands in the black bag, it gets tossed into the river and disappears forever. This notion serves as a symbol for those matters that will never be brought up again. For the purposes of the story, I adapted it into espionage jargon even though such terminology isn’t real—though perhaps it ought to be.\”
