NEW YORK (AP) — Following only two weeks of release in cinemas,
“A Minecraft Movie”
Is already the top-earning Hollywood release of 2025.
The video game adaptation by Warner Bros. followed up
its blockbuster opening
With a second weekend grossing approximately $80.6 million at the box office, as per studio projections on Sunday, it has swiftly exceeded $550 million globally.
Following its impressive $300 million worldwide launch, \”A Minecraft Movie\” kept attracting viewers at a rate unmatched by any other release this year. Directed by Jared Hess and featuring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the movie saw a drop of 50 percent in ticket sales during its second weekend across U.S. and Canadian cinemas—a remarkable retention considering the massive opening figures.
Although critics panned the film (scoring 46% \”fresh\” on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences gave it just decent marks (\”B+\” from CinemaScore), \”A Minecraft Movie\” managed to resonate strongly with viewers who have been flocking in large numbers to see high-production-value movies like this one.

\”A Minecraft Movie,\” a joint venture between Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment with a budget of $150 million, has temporarily revived theater attendance following a sluggish beginning to the year. According to data from Comscore, total ticket sales this past weekend doubled compared to the corresponding period in 2024. Prior to \”A Minecraft\” hitting theaters, box office earnings lagged behind those of the previous year by 11%. However, they have since almost reached parity again. None of the weekend’s newly released movies — including \”The King of Kings\” from Angel Studios, \”The Amateur\” from Walt Disney Co., \”Drop\” by Universal Pictures, or \”Warfare\” from A24 — managed to come near toppling \”Minecraft.\” However, some films exceeded projections.

“The Amateur,”
A film from 20th Century Productions, featuring Rami Malek as a CIA cryptologist pursuing those responsible for his spouse\’s death, opened with domestic earnings of $15 million and an additional $17.2 million internationally. The movie was considered an ill-fitting showcase for Malek by critics, despite him also serving as one of the producers. \”The Amateur\” had a production budget of $60 million.
“Warfare,”
Director Alex Garland’s next project after
2024’s “Civil War,”
launched with $8.3 million in box office earnings across 2,670 theaters. The movie, an A24 production, was penned and directed jointly by Garland and Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza. Inspired by a 2006 operation involving him and his fellow Navy SEALs during the conflict, \”Warfare\” had a budget of approximately $20 million. Critics praised the film for its quality.
a remarkably lifelike depiction of battle.
“Drop,”
The newest horror offering from Blumhouse Productions opened with $7.5 million across 3,085 cinemas.
