Microsoft Corporation is launching two budget-friendly editions of its primary Surface products to generate more enthusiasm for machines capable of utilizing the firm’s AI technologies and to enhance competition against Apple’s lineup of sleek gadgets.
The 13-inch Surface Laptop and the 12-inch Surface Pro convertible tablet became available for purchase on Tuesday and will be delivered to customers in the United States and certain international markets beginning May 20.
Both models are slimmer, more lightweight, and offer extended battery life compared to their predecessors. However, they come without the advanced processors and larger storage choices available in earlier Surface devices yet are priced at the same level or even higher.
According to the company, the laptop supports up to 16 hours of web browsing per battery charge, whereas the tablet is intended to be lightweight and able to run desktop software.
The Surface lineup makes up only a small portion of Microsoft’s overall sales, contributing roughly 2% to their revenue in the latest financial year, and an equally minuscule share of the worldwide PC market. However, this series serves as a demonstration model for Windows devices crafted specifically to compete directly with premium MacBook models from Apple, thereby enhancing the reputation of the Windows OS.
In recent years, these goals have focused on AI-powered tools capable of producing text and visuals along with interacting through conversations. Last year, Microsoft introduced an additional keyboard feature that calls up their Copilot AI assistant and integrated functionalities like email summary creation and image production into various Windows programs.
The new Surface devices feature the \’Copilot + PC\’ label from Microsoft, which denotes premium machines equipped with what they call a neural processing unit. This component manages functions such as live translations during video conferences or image creation, thereby alleviating the workload of the CPU—in this instance, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus—allowing it to focus on other operations.
Qualcomm\’s chips utilize the power-saving ARM architecture originally developed for mobile phones. This may lead to compatibility problems, especially with video games or specialized business software written for Intel processors, which have long been dominant in PCs.
During a conference call with journalists last week, Microsoft’s head of Windows and Devices, Pavan Davuluri, stated that the company has resolved compatibility problems for ‘most’ of their clientele.
The Surface Laptop tips the scales at 2.7 pounds and measures 0.61 inches in thickness; it includes a touchscreen and carries a base price of $899. In contrast, the Surface Pro weighs only 1.5 pounds and boasts a depth of under one-third of an inch, equipped with the series\’ characteristic adjustable stand as well as both front and back cameras. This model initiates at $799—however, this does not include the cost of the stylus or the optional snap-on keyboard which are available for purchase separately.
Davuluri did not mention if US tariffs influenced the pricing of the new devices, referring to them as \”an evolving factor.\” The Surface computers showcased during a recent press event were manufactured in Mexico.
The latest models feature 16 gigabytes of RAM and provide options for either 256 or 512 gigabytes of storage. In comparison, the earlier versions provided up to 64GB of memory, along with 1 terabyte of storage space and featured additional processing cores, enabling them to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
In recent times, Surface sales have dropped as part of an overall downturn in consumer electronics buying following the pandemic. Although Microsoft does not report individual quarter hardware figures, device sales decreased by 15%, totaling $4.7 billion throughout fiscal year 2024.
