Columbus Teen Screenwriting Contest Returns: Empowering Young Writers Through Film Experience

The Columbus Teen Screenwriting Workshop and Competition is scheduled to make its comeback for its ninth year, providing young aspiring writers in Central Ohio an exclusive chance to hone their screenwriting abilities and watch their concepts materialize on-screen. This initiative, working alongside various partners, aims to enrich the creative journey of these teens.
Columbus College of Art and Design
(CCADC) will be operational from mid-April through mid-May.

Available to students between 13 and 18 years old from Franklin, Delaware, Licking, Fairfield, Pickaway, Madison, and Union counties, this contest offers complimentary entry into sessions guided by professionals focusing on screenwriting skills. Attendees will participate in two comprehensive workshops conducted by Kingsley Nyarko, who heads CCAD’s Film & Video department, delving into key aspects such as character building and story architecture.

After completing the workshops, teenagers have the opportunity to submit a script ranging from 5 to 7 pages for evaluation by experts in the film industry. The winning screenplays will then be brought to life by CCAD students during their collaborative video course this autumn, giving aspiring writers an up-close look at how movies are made.

John Daugherty, who serves as both the Film Commissioner and Director,
Film Columbus
, highlighted the significance of backing local filmmakers.

\”The aim of A Film Columbus is to back and fund filmmakers across central Ohio throughout all stages of their careers, ranging from young novice storytellers to seasoned experts in the field. By 2025, they plan to allocate over $600,000 through subsidies and rewards aimed at assisting regional creators in bringing their narratives to fruition. Initiatives such as these play a crucial role in achieving those goals,\” stated Daugherty.

The focus on creative collaboration at CCAD creates an excellent setting for fostering emerging talent. As Nyarko stated, \”Within CCAD, creative collaboration forms the core of the filmmaking approach, turning our organization into the perfect place to transform the top contest scripts into reality.\”

Brittany Brown, the CCAD Program Manager
Creative Collaboration
, emphasized the advantages of the collaboration.

\”Our partnership with Film Columbus offers students an incredible opportunity to engage in every stage of filmmaking, from concept development to final production. By working alongside industry professionals and peers, participants gain hands-on experience that prepares them for future education and careers in the field,\” Brown said.

The workshops will provide adaptable attendance choices to fit hectic schedules, offering several dates for each session.
