Academy Adds Exciting Stunt Category for the Oscar\’s 100th Anniversary

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced a new competitive category for stunts, which will make its first appearance shortly.

On Thursday, the organization’s governing board announced that the inaugural Achievement in Stunt Design award will recognize stunts from movies distributed in 2027.

As far back as the beginning of film history, stunt designing has played a crucial role in movie production,\” stated Bill Kramer, CEO, and Janet Yang, president, jointly. \”We are delighted to recognize the groundbreaking efforts of these skilled technicians and creatives, and we commend them for their unwavering commitment and passion that have led to this significant milestone.

The Academy stated that the guidelines and criteria for the category will not be revealed until 2027, and details regarding how the award will be presented will be established later by both the board of governors and the Academy’s executive leaders.

Entertainment Weekly
has discovered that Leitch and O\’Hara spearheaded the effort to introduce this category, delivering multiple presentations to the Academy before the board of governors gave their approval for the new category.

Besides representing actors, directors, writers, and others, the Academy’s membership comprises approximately 100 stunt experts who are part of the Production and Technology branch.

The Academy announced last year that the 98th Oscars, scheduled for next year, will introduce a new category called Achievement in Casting. This accolade will recognize films from the 2025 release year.
