Could \”A Minecraft Movie\” be the first blockbusters of the year to hit the billion-dollar mark?
Sure, Warner Bros. and Legendary’s PG-rated video game adaptation is well on track to reach the coveted $1 billion milestone, with box office takings climbing above $500 million within just two weeks since its debut. As of now, “Minecraft” has amassed an impressive total of $550.6 million worldwide, breaking down into $269.6 million from overseas markets and $281 million from domestic showings. This makes it not only the top-grossing movie for this year but also surpasses Disney and Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World,” which earned $213 million internationally and $410 million overall after spending nine weeks in theaters.
During the weekend, \”A Minecraft Movie\” brought in an additional $79.6 million across 76 international markets, showing a decline of 45% since its initial release outside North America. The leading regions were the United Kingdom with $39.8 million, followed by China at $20.3 million, then Germany with $18.9 million, and finally Mexico contributing $18.7 million.
In its debut, Disney and 20th Century’s vigilante thriller “The Amateur” led new entries by earning $17.2 million across 52 markets. The film performed best in France where it made $1.6 million, followed closely by the UK with $1.4 million and Mexico also contributing $1.4 million. Starring Rami Malek as an avenging CIA operative pursuing the terrorists responsible for his wife\’s death, the movie launched domestically with $15 million, bringing its worldwide total to $32.2 million. These early revenues surpass expectations; however, considering its $60 million cost, “The Amateur” will require sustained success at the box office to recoup its investment.
A new offering from Universal and Blumhouse, the horror flick \”Drop,\” underperformed internationally during its opening weekend, earning only $2 million across 47 territories. However, it fared somewhat better domestically, grossing $7.7 million, which brought its global tally to $10 million. Fortunately for the production team, \”Drop\” received positive critical reception and had a modest budget of $11 million, making profitability achievable without significant returns. In this thriller, actress Meghann Fahy, known for her role in \”The White Lotus,\” portrays Violet, a widow navigating threats through disturbing calls while out on a first date with Henry, played by Brandon Sklenar from \”It Ends With Us.\”
