A victory for indie film and the evolving landscape of moviemaking has arrived with the unveiling of six projects as part of Antigravity Academy’s premier initiative, the Antigravity Academy Screenwriters Camp. Established to highlight distinctive voices within filmmaking and assist these talents in crafting scripts for their initial feature-length productions, this venture involves an immersive five-day session held at Lake Arrowhead, California, complemented by half a year of ongoing support, culminating in strategic industry introductions designed to bring these ideas into fruition. Upon completion of the Screenwriters Camp, every entrant will leave equipped not only with a refined screenplay but also a preliminary collaboration agreement from Unapologetic Projects.

The Antigravity Academy Screenwriters Camp will be headed by Abi Brizuela, who was previously the Director of the Artist Community at the

The person who led the first edition of the program last year was also involved. Producer Valerie Bush, director Carlos López Estrada, and Holly Stanton, who heads up Antigravity’s Development division, will oversee the growth of the six projects throughout the coming year. Financial supporter and co-founder of Unapologetic Projects, Chris Quintos Cathcart, is likewise backing this endeavor.
Brizuela and López Estadada jointly stated, “The previous year’s camping event was profoundly impactful, with participants now having completed scripts for six exceptionally remarkable movies. For this upcoming session, we’re excited about introducing six fresh initiatives led by emerging talents who will significantly influence the future of indie cinema.”
Many participants from the initial iteration of Screenwriters Camp have seen significant advancements in their careers due to their involvement in the program. Notably, Jay Pendarvis Jr. joined forces with talent agency M88, whereas A.J. Riggins became part of 3 Arts Entertainment. Additionally, Alexandra Qin secured representation through UTA and was invited to participate in the Sundance Institute’s Screenwriters Lab for her project \”Thirstygirl.\” These fellows each benefited from personalized mentorship provided by top-tier filmmakers including Greg Kwedar, Clint Bentley (\”Singing Sam\”), Sean Wang (\”Brother Brother\”), Pamela Adlon (\”Better Things\”), and Marcus Gardley (\”The Color Purple\”).
The Antigravity Academy functions as the production company for López Estrada (\”Blindspotting,\”).
Raya and the Last Dragon
), who founded the company in 2022 with the intention of scaling a community-driven approach to filmmaking into a first-of-its-kind platform for visionary artists. As proven by their first produced project, Sean Wang\’s award-winning film \”Dìdi\” (弟弟)\” – winner of prizes at both last year\’s Sundance and this year\’s Film Independent Spirit Awards – López Estrada and the Antigravity team continue to make good on their intention to amplify underrepresented voices and improve industry accessibility for first-time filmmakers.
In addition to producing films, Antigravity collaborates on quarterly Community Nights in Los Angeles, drawing hundreds of emerging filmmakers. They\’ve introduced a paid mentoring program and initiated the well-received Satellite Sessions panel series, done alongside CAPE and the Dolby Institute. This series has hosted discussions with notable figures such as \”CODA\” director Sian Heder and AMPAS President Janet Yang. Their commitment to these accessible educational programs and community engagement activities plays an essential role in their influence within and beyond Hollywood’s circles.
