Malaysia\’s Penang seeks to sell durian tourism to India, Australia, Europe

Penang is broadening its durian-themed tourism initiatives to draw in more tourists from India, Australia, the Middle East, and Europe.

The durian season in Penang starts around mid-May and continues through early August.

Rather than concentrating on conventional markets such as those within ASEAN nations and China, the government intends to pursue emerging international markets, specifically targeting India and the Middle Eastern region.

The news agency cited Wong Hon Wai, chairperson of the Tourism and Creative Economy Committee, stating this information.

This support comes from the presence of non-stop flights from India and the Middle East to Penang, facilitating an increase in tourist arrivals during the durian season.

Last year, Indian airline IndiGo introduced direct services from Chennai to Penang, with Qatar Airways concurrently offering direct flights to Penang as well.

Wong mentioned that this year’s durian production might decrease because of irregular rainfall, yet he remains hopeful that the prices will stay reasonable.

Penang, specifically the town of Balik Pulau, hosts durian plantations known for cultivating top-quality types such as black thorn, Musang King, and Ang Heh (red prawn).
