Steinfeld, who has mixed heritage as she is half-Black and half-Filipino through her mother, portrays a multiracial vampire character named Mary set in the 1930s American South within a horror narrative.

I feel profoundly thankful for the intimate bond we each share with the subject matter; in my case, it’s tied to my family legacy and my grandfather, whom I wish were still around to address all the queries this film brought up for me and which inspired me to create this project.

Coogler stated, \”Whenever I wished to reflect upon him, I found myself tuning into those blues albums. And whenever the music was powerful and resonant enough, coupled with a sufficiently dim setting, I felt as though he was present beside me, sharing this moment.\”
